Here is a change that costs nothing and requires giving up nothing: eat in a different order.
Start the meal with the vegetables and the dal or curd. Then the sabzi or the protein. Then the rice or roti last.
Several small clinical studies have found that eating fibre and protein before carbohydrate produces a noticeably gentler rise in blood sugar after the meal — in some trials, meaningfully lower peaks than eating the same food in the reverse order. Same plate. Same calories. Different response.
Why it works is not mysterious. Fibre slows how quickly the stomach empties. Protein prompts hormones that moderate the glucose spike. By the time the rice arrives, the runway is shorter.
There is a second benefit that people notice faster than any number: you feel full earlier. Most of us fill up on rice first and then push the dal around. Reverse it, and the rice becomes what it probably should have been all along — the accompaniment, not the meal.
Try it for one week. Vegetables first, dal or curd second, rice last. Nothing removed, nothing bought, nothing counted.
The best habits are the ones that do not feel like discipline.
